Carlos Beltran was impressed by George Steinbrenner after meeting with the
Yankees owner earlier in the week, and told a newspaper in Puerto Rico that he
would not be intimidated by playing in New York. The free-agent All-Star center
fielder who led the Texas Rangers within one win of their first World Series,
talked with Steinbrenner in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday With a contingent led by owner Fred Wilpon and general manager Omar Minaya, the New York Mets visited All-Star center fielder Carlos Beltran and agent Scott Boras in Puerto Rico on Monday. According to a person close to the situation, the Mets did not make an offer during their meeting, which was attended by Wilpon, Minaya, assistant GM Jim Duquette and special assistant Tony Bernazard. Wilpon is the third baseball owner to meet with Beltran and Boras since the Yankees' George Steinbrenner started the get-acquainted meetings in Tampa, Fla., on Dec. 21. Senior vice president of baseball operations Jim Duquette and special assistant Tony Bernazard also made the trip. We had a very productive meeting," Boras said after the session at a San Juan hotel. Boras would not discuss whether the Mets made an offer during the meeting.A similar trip helped Minaya and the Mets lure star pitcher Pedro Martinez this offseason. Minaya traveled to the Dominican Republic at Thanksgiving and dined with Martinez, who agreed to a $53 million, four-year contract with New York last month.
